Hypnosis – Party Trick or Pathway to Healing?

Very often, when I share with others that I am a hypnotherapist, they say things like, “Can you make people quack like a duck?” or “I would never let someone take over my mind!”

There are so many misconceptions out there about hypnosis. And it’s a shame because hypnotherapy has so many positive uses and benefits.

For example, solution-focused hypnosis is a practical, modern method used to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time. Transpersonal hypnotherapy is a holistic approach that takes the mind, body, and spirit into consideration, aimed at emotional and spiritual healing.

How does hypnosis work?

Relaxation for the mind and body is created through guided visualization. When in a state of hypnosis, your brain waves are similar to the time just before falling asleep. Hypnotherapy works with your patterns, habits, and behaviors stored in your subconscious mind to create agreement with the conscious mind. Suggestions that fit with your belief system will be accepted as your new reality.

Will I do anything against my morals or values?

No. If you were given a suggestion that you did not agree with, you would simply refuse or awaken. You are always in control. Caring, professional hypnotherapy is nothing like the silly antics of “stage-hypnosis” you may have seen on TV.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Yes, based on the person’s ability to concentrate and relax. You must be willing to undergo hypnosis. There is a direct correlation between “willingness to relax” and “ability to undergo hypnosis.”

What is a hypnosis session like?

You will spend a total of approximately 90 minutes (most often split into two sessions). Your initial session begins with an interview to discuss the session’s ‘focus’ and ‘intention’ for the desired outcome. The hypnosis session begins with guided visualization that leads to deep relaxation where light, medium, or deep levels of hypnosis occur when the hypnotherapy is provided for the intention of the session.

What do I look for in an effective hypnotherapist?

A thorough foundation in the methodology and practice of hypnosis is required and recognized by certification through a professional hypnosis organization. In addition to hypnosis certification, your provider must have a solid background in psychology, ethics, business, and health promotion. A real plus is specialized training enhancing the practice and outcomes (e.g. pain relief, addiction, coaching, MD, or Allied Health Professional).

Expectations for Transformation

I always recommend you have anticipation, rather than expectation. That’s a grounded approach to making a shift in life. Explore and discover with curiosity and excitement. One does not know what is available unless you seek it out. Come open and receptive. Prayer and meditation may be beneficial prior to attending sessions for clarity and openness.
